SUMMER 2013 CLIMATE ACTIONS:
We urge everyone to support, in whatever ways you can, the following IMAC-endorsed actions being planned for the coming weeks in the Washington, DC area. Actions planned for other locations are listed here.
1) The 2013 Walk For Our Grandchildren - July 19th - July 27th
This week-long walk will take an intergenerational message of hope from Camp David to the White House to demand that the President reject the Keystone XL Pipeline and to call for climate action now.
Walkers from across the country are joining forces for a week of sweat, media opportunities, awareness building in local communities, and shared commitment to making change happen. Thru walkers will camp and eat together along the route while shuttles will be available to take day walkers back to their vehicles. Please note: it is not necessary to commit to the entire route to participate.

2) Stand Up Against Fossil Fuel Lies - Friday, July 26th
In the heart of downtown DC's corporate fossil fuel corridor, we will join together to Stand Up Against Fossil Fuel Lies. We're going to take nonviolent direct action to expose how the fossil fuel industry distorts the climate debate. Due to the nature of this action, specific details will not be available until a training on the evening of July 25th at a location in DC to be announced. Note, however, that there is an important role for everyone no matter if you're willing to risk arrest or to stand in support.

3) Rally at the White House Saturday, July 27th
On July 27th, we're coming together in Lafayette Park across from the White House to say to President Obama: Keep Your Promises! We will gather by the thousands with walkers from the Walk For Our Grandchildren and other partners to call upon President Obama to turn dreams into deeds by rejecting the Keystone XL Pipeline and taking steps to begin leaving fossil fuels in the ground.
Click here for more information and to sign up for the actions on either the 26th and 27th.
Finally, we want to express our deep gratitude for the groundbreaking action taken recently by the 29th General Synod of the United Church of Christ in overwhelmingly adopting a Resolution urging divestment from fossil fuel companies and other strategies to combat climate change. (Read more here.)
That action was followed this week by an equally compelling one, for which we are also profoundly grateful, taken by more than 200 leading evangelical scientists who issued an appeal to Congress to immediately take steps to address the climate crisis. See full text of the letter here. One of the cosigners, Dr. Calvin DeWitt, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison, offered this reflection: I am a scientist because I am a Christian, and with that comes a commitment to use my knowledge of science to honor God as a creator. There is a real directive from Scripture to care for the earth and when we see evidence of degradation, which we see with climate change, Scripture commands us to speak up and work against that degradation.
By supporting the actions like those outlined above, you will be adding your much-needed voice to the growing call for action to address the climate crisis based on the moral imperative of doing so.
